What to Bring to Indonesia

Pack for tropical weather, island adventures, and the activities in your itinerary. Traveling with practical essentials makes your journey more comfortable. Before departure, also check Indonesia’s customs rules, as some items require declaration, supporting documents, or special permission.

Essential Travel Items

  • Passport, visa where required, and return or onward flight details.

  • Travel insurance documents and emergency contacts.

  • Lightweight clothing, swimwear, and a sun-protective rash guard.

  • Comfortable walking shoes and sandals.

  • Modest clothing for temples, villages, and religious sites.

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and insect repellent.

  • A light rain jacket and warmer layer for mountain visits.

  • Waterproof dry bag for boat trips.

  • Phone, camera, chargers, and a suitable travel adapter.

  • Personal medication with any required prescription.

Personal Belongings You Can Bring

You can generally bring reasonable quantities of clothing, toiletries, and personal electronics for your own use. Customs distinguishes personal belongings from goods intended for sale. Special rules, duties, or declarations may apply to certain items.

Check your airline’s separate baggage rules before packing liquids, batteries, power banks, and sporting equipment.

Medication and Prescriptions

Bring medication in its original labeled packaging, together with an English-language prescription when required. Declare medicines on your customs declaration and check the permitted quantity before departure.

A prescription does not automatically make every medicine legal in Indonesia. BPOM prohibits importing narcotic medicines and applies specific conditions to psychotropic medicines. If your medication contains a controlled substance, confirm its status with BPOM before traveling.

Items That Require Extra Checks

  • Food, animals, plants, and agricultural products: Check quarantine requirements before bringing them. Some items require permits, certificates, or inspection.

  • Alcohol and tobacco: These have specific quantity limits and eligibility rules. Excess quantities can be confiscated and destroyed.

  • High-value purchases and commercial goods: Declare them where required; import duties and taxes may apply.

  • Cash and payment instruments: You must declare a combined value of IDR 100 million or more, or its equivalent in foreign currency. Additional currency rules may apply.

Items You Must Not Bring

Do not bring illegal drugs, prohibited narcotic substances, pornographic materials, or unauthorized weapons, ammunition, and explosives. Some restricted goods require advance permission; declaring them does not make them legal to import.
